AWS: Fastest-Growing AI Startups Don't Start With the Best Model

The Fastest-Growing AI Startups Don’t Start With the Best Model

Every week, another foundation model tops the leaderboard and another founder rewrites their roadmap around it. But when AWS surveyed more than 3,400 startups for its Engines of Growth report, the data told a different story: the fastest-growing AI companies don’t win because they picked the right model first; they win because they built the right feedback loop.

“The most common mistake I see founders make with AI is treating model choice as the only big decision. The engine matters, but races are won in the pit lane,” says Nicolas Tarducci, EMEA Startup Solutions Architecture Leader at AWS. The Engines of Growth research found that AI-native startups grow revenue by an average of 156% a year, versus 65% for startups overall, and over half of them generate more than $400K per employee. AWS customer Lovable proves how fast this can compound when they went from zero to $100 M ARR in just eight months.

“The teams I work with that hit those numbers don’t start by training their own model. They ship in weeks on an off-the-shelf model, log every user interaction, and build an evaluation loop that shows them every day where the product fails. 72 % of AI-native startups have built proprietary AI, against 30 % overall — but the winners earn that moat. They don’t start with it,” adds Tarducci.

That mindset — ship fast, measure relentlessly, earn your moat — is exactly why AWS is at Slush this year. We’re here to help founders start their engines and accelerate from idea to traction without reinventing the infrastructure underneath.

“AWS has been supporting us and startups for a long time and it’s a privilege to work with long-term partners who share our mission of helping founders. AWS powers countless teams on their growth journey, and we’re glad AWS is returning to Slush as a Main Partner to make sure the ecosystem around startups is as strong as ever,” says Noora Saksa, CEO at Slush.

Visit the AWS booth to take on an F1 simulator challenge, dive into engaging conversations with the fastest-growing startups at the Startup Studio, and meet the AWS team to get all your burning business and technical questions answered.
