University of Helsinki

Research breakthroughs enhance lives and support economic growth

With innovation transfer fundamental to its strategic plan, the University will once again showcase innovations from multiple research fields at Slush 2025 and organise the Signature Side Svent Y Science.

The University of Helsinki is committed to securing a place among Europe’s leading innovation universities and is actively working to realise this ambition. Some of the more than 100 invention disclosures made annually at the University are developed into technologies with commercial potential that can help tackle major global challenges.

“Universities have the capacity to drive economic growth through innovations far beyond their current contribution. That’s why we are investing up to €10 million more through our internal private equity fund in businesses originating at the University. This is part of our efforts to commercialise research,” says Marjo Berglund, CFO of the University of Helsinki and responsible for the University’s innovation activities.

More than 30 research-based spinouts have been established at the University of Helsinki, generating about €330 million in value and creating more than 300 jobs. Our incubators have supported the formation of around 80 startups, with more than 900 individuals acquiring business knowledge and skills. Collaboration with businesses has both expanded and evolved considerably.

"The University of Helsinki is a driving force in science and academia across Europe. Through the groundbreaking innovations they showcase at Slush and at life science side event Y Science, this year’s partnership perfectly reflects what Slush is all about: helping founders solve the world’s biggest challenges." says Aino Bergius, CEO of Slush.

As multidisciplinarity is among the University’s key strengths, its Partner Booth will feature projects spanning multiple research fields:

Acouspin Oy has developed ultrasound-enhanced electrospinning technology for the production of exceptionally fine nanofibres from various materials. These can be used for purposes such as filtering microplastics from water.

Navigator is developing a new method for the early detection of brain metastases, enabling earlier and more effective treatment.

AgentFormers is a seamless, scalable no-code platform that allows organisations to automate routine tasks, focus on core operations, save time and deliver a better service experience.

You can explore the projects in more detail on our website, which will be updated in the autumn.

The University’s technology transfer and commercialisation company, Helsinki Innovation Services Ltd, supports top research teams in transforming their invetions into commercially successful ventures.

The Slush Signature Side Svent Y Science is dedicated to life science innovation and bringing together researchers, students, businesses and investors. This year’s event, organised by the University of Helsinki’s Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE), will take place on Wed, Nov 19, 2025, and will include inspiring talks and pitching competitions in the subjects of: Health and Pharma; Food Systems; and Nature and Forestry, alongside a showcase of exciting research-to-business projects.
